3362 eán mē (consisting of 1437/eán, "if" and 3361/mē, "not") – unless; literally, "if not."  3362/eán mē ("unless, if not") negates the underlying idea of the statement that follows, ruling out its "spin-off possibilities" (suggestions, implications).  Jn 3:5: "Jesus answered, 'Amen, amen I say to you, if not (Gk ean mē) someone is born again . . . '."
