HELPS Lexicon excerpt

Cognate: 2852 kolaphízō (from kolaphos "a blow struck by the fist") – properly, to strike with the fist (literally "knuckles"); to hit hard "with the knuckles, to make the blow sting and crush . . . in 2 Cor 12:7 the idea is striking with something sharp and painful, sticking deeply in the flesh so it remains there" (R. Lenski).
